Student Essay/Poster Contests: Call for entries – Great American Smokeout 2022

The Ross County Health District is hosting student essay and poster contests to commemorate the annual tobacco cessation event, the Great American Smokeout:

  1. Poster contest: 4th-5th grades
  2. Essay contest: 7th-8th grades
  3. Essay contest: 9th-12th grades

Please include your name, grade, and school with your submissions.

RCHD will be selecting a winner for each category for each school district (including homeschool category) and a grand prize winner for the entire county.

**Content submitted may be used by the Ross County Health District for development of health promotional materials, health messaging, and health education programs.

Essay contest prompt:  In 500 words or more, explore the following questions:  Why you think kids vape today? How could vaping affect your health in the short-term and long-term? What are some steps a person could take to stop vaping?

Poster contest prompt:  Illustrate the negative effects of vaping such as nicotine addiction, ingesting harmful chemicals, lung damage/disease, likelihood to use other tobacco products or drugs.

Poster Contest Rules:

Entry is open to all Ross County students in GRADES 4 & 5 (homeschool, private, and public school students are all included)

Creativity is key. Individual work is encouraged. Posters with stencils, traced, computer-generated or commercially manufactured stick-on lettering or images will be disqualified.

Poster should be no larger than 11”x14.”  Entries larger than the identified size may be disqualified.

Students should use only crayon, markers, colored pencils, or watercolor/acrylic paint.

Contest deadlines are Friday, November 18.

Essays and posters will be collected from schools by RCHD on November 18.

For more than 40 years, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November.  This yearly event is a benchmark for tobacco users to quit and also an opportunity for organizations to facilitate their own tobacco cessation programs.

The Great American Smokeout event challenges people to stop smoking and helps people learn about the many tools they can use to help them quit and stay quit.
